A Day in the Life of an Indie Author…

Do you ever dream your book?

I do.

When I go to sleep at night, my mind is buzzing with whatever story I was working on and I fall to sleep dreaming of my stories.

And occasionally my waking dreams help me work through whatever plot holes had been bugging me the day before.

But this article is supposed to show a day in my life as an indie author….

So, if you don’t mind bullet points, I’ll begin.  (But I will warn you in advance – this is not as glamorous as it sounds.  There is a lot of hard work, annoyed family members and friends, occasional rushed dinners, lunches and lost sleep.)

I will write about today – a typical Tuesday, so if you are still with me, let’s begin.

The Map of My Tuesday

  • My alarm wakes me at 5:40am. After I’m sure that my consciousness is fully awake, I grab the notebook I keep on my bedside table and jot down anything I want to remember for later from my waking dreams.
  • I then get up, shower, dress, check my daughter to see if she needs anything, tell my husband he’s a lucky so’n’so for being able to sleep in and then zoom off to work.
  • I then slave at my desk job from 7:30am to about 12 noon. As many indie authors will be familiar with, a good percentage of any type of author (whether traditional or self published) still has a ‘day job’ to help pay the bills.
  • Here I will either read while eating, or write while eating.  I only have a thirty minute lunch so I usually alternate this.
  • I then slave again from about 12:30pm to 4:30pm and then I go home.
  • On the way home I either run any errands (groceries etc) I have to do on the way home from work. It saves time having to go out later (or on the weekend) so that my writing does not get interrupted.
  • Get home and rush to get dinner ready. While making dinner I have either my tablet/laptop open, checking my email, social media and my website.  I use buffer to schedule my twitter and Google+ posts and I check how that is going. (I usually schedule all my posts through Buffer on Friday nights.)
  • Between 5:30pm and 6:00pm we all eat dinner (very exciting).
  • 6:15pm: Kids arrive for babysitting. (I babysit for friends every Tuesday night)
  • From 6:30pm to 8:00pm I am keeping three children under six entertained, fed and watered. Then just before 8pm, getting them ready for bed with milk and stories.
  • 8:00pm to 12 midnight I write (and occasionally check on the sleeping children). My writing usually ends up being crap (but that’s what rewrites and edits are for), and if for some reason I can’t write, I will work on either book marketing or helping to promote other authors and their work.
  • 12 midnight. Once the kids have been collected by their parents, I am off to bed to start the whole process all over again on Wednesday (minus the babysitting).

My Monday to Fridays are always like this.  My weekends are usually spent spending time with my family and going out somewhere on Saturday if the weather is good.  Then the rest of my time is spent either writing, on book covers, and editing (usually a back and forth with third parties), marketing, catching up on emails and any webinars/courses/podcasts I have signed up for.

And weekends are also when I publish my finished works to kindle, Createspace, Draft2Digital etc.

As you can see, my daily routine is all very unexciting and unglamorous.  Any other author out there can probably see their own routine reflected in the one I have laid out above with minimal deviation.

Well, I had better get back to writing so I can give you all something to read 🙂

“You’re the Voice”

I was listening to one of my favourite songs the other day – ‘You’re the Voice’ by John Farnham.  I grew up with that song and it is a song with meaning.  It is one of the great Australian songs of my generation (in my humble opinion).

Now, I just happened to listen to it just after the horror that happened in Charlottesville, Virginia, last Saturday.  And as I listened I thought that with a little bit more of an addition to the lyrics, that a poem showing my feelings about what could be the outcome might help me to express my frustration about what is happening in this country at the moment.

You’re the Voice

The Book of history
is laid bare and open.
We now have the chance
to turn its fragile pages over.
We can read what we want to read.
We can write what we want to write.
But history’s words will come out.
It’s immutable truth will be heard.
By those who had no ears to hear it
We are all someone’s child, and
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
How long can we harangue each other
With the trite words of a demagogue?
How long can we have the mistakes of the past
Held up as the Golden Ideal?
The silent majority needs to take a stand
It is time that our views on what is right
And what is wrong are heard.
We are the voice of the unheard masses,
We need to try and understand it, and once we do,
We need to make our message heard and make it clear,
We are no longer going to sit in silence,
We are no longer going to live with fear.
This time, we know we all can stand together
We are many, but we are one.
And from all over this great Earth we come
We share a dream, but we will speak with one voice
With the belief we can make it better
With that voice
We have the power to be powerful
We have the power to be heard
We have the power to come out and vote,
We have the power to tell our elected officials
That we are this country
That they work for us, answer to us.
They are nothing without the citizens of this country
Your vote is the best way to enact change
Your vote is the best way to deal with
Bigotry, hate, sexism, fear, and religious persecution.
Your vote is the one, best way to show
That we will no longer remain silent
We are The Voice
And we will be heard.

Thank you for reading

News, an announcement and a first look for email subscribers

I have been awfully quiet of late.  That is because I have been a little sick over the last month or so.  So much so that I was admitted into hospital on my birthday with an annoying case of cellulitis and was there for a week.  I have now just started to get my energy back and wanting to return to writing and get my production schedule back on track.

And David B contacted me the other day (Hi David!) and asked a very pertinent question, which I will answer below…

Announcement Time!

Now I have some news that I need to share with all of you.

Azure Fire Publishing, a 501(c)(3) Literary Nonprofit publisher, devoted to promoting Youth Friendly Fantasy and Science Fiction to all ages

I have been offered a writing contract with Azure Fire Publishing and I have decided to accept it.  All of my Fantasy/Sci-Fi books will slowly start the transition over to be published by them.  My Weird Western (John McCall Mysteries) and Urban Fantasy series (The Order and Ravensdale) will stay with me.

What will this mean for my back catalogue and future Fantasy/Sci-Fi publications? Well, I will get more exposure as a published author with paperback books going into bookshops and also audio books (something I’ve wanted to do for a while but just haven’t had the funds). The publishing company will give my books a nice professional edit. And as well as getting a bit of polishing inside, you will continue to see the same gorgeous covers that were designed for me by Deranged Doctor Designs.

This also means that The Way to Freedom Book 6 – The Searchers, will not be released until Azure Fire have released the previous 5 books Plus Book 1.1.  To make up for this wait, I am going to release the raw chapters every couple of weeks via this email list for you all to read.

What will this mean for readers? My work will be able to reach more individuals in more places while offering a higher quality read and you will get a better end product.

About new books, news, specials and the next Freedom book

Spring is going strong here in Ohio, with at least one large thunderstorm running through each week.  This then has everyone on edge about twisters… But weird weather is a thing here in Ohio – very much like living in Victoria, Australia.  You can go through all four seasons in one day. 🙂

What am I working on now? Well, book 6 and 7 of the Way to Freedom series now have covers and are due to be released soon.  I’ll give you a sneak peak at the cover for The Searchers, which is Book 6.

While that is underway, I’ve started re-writing my urban fantasy novel Winter’s Magic.  This will be re-released at about the same time as The Searchers and will be the first in an urban fantasy series called The Order set in Australia.  I will also be working on a partner series based in the same ‘universe’ but set here in Ohio called Ravensdale.

Oh, and Citizen Erased will be out soon as well, I’ll show off the cover for that next time 🙂

Here is the long awaited cover for The Searchers – Book 6 of The Way to Freedom Series.

‘No such thing as a routine traffic stop.’

Traffic Stop Scenarios at the Citizen’s Academy run by the Dayton PD – Ohio

Hi Guys

Just thought I’d share some videos that I took while attending the Dayton Police Citizens Academy this week while doing writing research.  In this class we went through some traffic stop scenarios that officers have run into during the course of their shifts.

An interesting fact I found out is that traffic stops are one of the most dangerous parts of their job.  Not only do they run the risk of getting hit from other drivers, the people they pull over might be armed and do not want any police scrutiny.

According to the FBI Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted reports, 62 officers were killed during traffic stops from 2003 to 2012.  In 2012, 4,450 officers were wounded or assaulted in various manners during traffic stops.

Below are some examples of what can happen when people don’t obey the law on passing safely around stopped emergency service vehicles.  Photo credit – Ohio State Highway Patrol

Anyhow, here are some of the videos I took – enjoy Chris and Maggie’s acting ability, and be honest with yourself about what you would do if placed in these situations.
